We are overjoyed to be awarded as one of only five wines at the prestigious 2020 Perold Absa Cape Blend competition. Rubbing shoulders with some of South Africa’s most spectacular blended wines, our Wellington Wines La Cave Cape Blend 2018 has made us proud.

The competition celebrates the growing popularity of Pinotage-led blended wines with winemakers stretching their creativity with an innovative approach in developing a unique selling-point for the New World red-blended Cape Blend wines.

The Wellington Wines La Cave Cape Blend 2018 is a blend of 60% Pinotage, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.

Winemaker Francois van Niekerk says that by leading with Pinotage and its unique flavour profile, the classic Bordeaux-style cultivars of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot brings even more depth and structure to the final wine.

“Pinotage is such an expressive cultivar and excites with ripe fruit and impressive tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon brings a powerful length to the wine and mouth-feel whilst the Merlot rounds off the flavour profile with juicy berry flavours.”

The grapes were harvested at optimal condition and matured separately for eight months. The best oak casks were selected to make up the final blend and spent an additional 10 months in wood for a further maturation period before bottled.

Inviting with bright, ripe fruit and black cherry, dark chocolate and woody vanilla pods unravel on the nose. The palate is full-bodied with luscious red berry fruit, concentrated dried cranberries and wood spice supported by firm, broad tannins and a well-balanced acidity.
