At the ABSA Pinotage Competition our La Cave Pinotage 2018 has been awarded as one of the Top 20 best Pinotage wines in South Africa.
The competition, now it its 24th year, attracted 149 entries from some of the most prestigious wine growing regions in South Africa.
A delighted winemaker Francois van Niekerk said the award joining a host of others achieved this year for the very same wine, is exhilarating.
“The terroir of Wellington and our creative approach to winemaking is certainly paying off! Hugged by the Groenberg, Hawekwa and Limietberg mountain ranges, the area enjoys a variety of slopes and valleys at varying altitudes and aspects. The foothills situated 200m above sea-level, benefit from moist winds that frequently flow down the mountain slopes, cooling down the vineyards on even the hottest day. The small valleys create pockets with unique micro climates with varying sun and wind exposure – exceptional conditions for growing Pinotage to much success.”
The La Cave Pinotage 2018 opens up to a fruity nose with hints of plum and vanilla aromas. Ripe red fruit reveal on the full-bodied palate, beautifully balanced with firm yet mature tannins. It’s a luscious wine that will pair perfectly with red meat dishes and light curries.
The range of La Cave wines are our flagship and celebrates the early years of winemaking when wines were stored in caves during maturation and the recent discovery of a series of caves below our very own cellar. The grapes for the wines are meticulously hand-selected from the very best vineyard blocks and gently handle the grapes in the cellar with minimal disruption. The range consists of a Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Cape Blend and Shiraz, and matured in small first-fill French oak barrels before being bottled.
